Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Sizing central AC in Ottawa County means accounting for what the compressor is actually asked to do. Homes in Ottawa County, KS run cooling about four months a year, from June through September. A system that is undersized runs longer each cycle to keep up, and that extra cycling loads the contactor, the condenser fan motor, and the compressor itself across every hot month. A contractor working out a load calculation here cannot borrow a number from a neighboring job; the house envelope, the duct layout, and the orientation all feed into what the equipment will face. An install that gets the sizing right puts less mechanical stress on the parts that wear fastest.

Ductwork laid out for a system that has since been replaced at least once is what a contractor actually prices when quoting a central AC installation here. Half the homes in Ottawa County, Kansas were built in 1969 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That gap between the structure and the equipment running in it means the ducts a contractor finds may be sized, routed, or sealed for conditions a new unit does not replicate. The electrical service is the same question. A new central AC unit draws what it draws, and whether the existing circuits handle that load is something a contractor measures, not assumes.

What Central AC Involves at Each Part of the System

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms with furniture, attic ductwork connected to an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit on a pad linked by refrigerant lines.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, which together handle the heat that gets pulled out of your home. Inside, the air handler or furnace cabinet mounts in a utility space, basement, or closet and contains the evaporator coil that does the cooling work on the air passing through.

The thermostat goes on a central wall where it reads the temperature of the living space and signals the rest of the system to run or stop. A refrigerant line set runs between the indoor and outdoor units, and a condensate drain line carries moisture pulled from the air to a floor drain or outside.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house.
