Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story gray house with a columned front porch, viewed from a wet concrete walkway crossing a green lawn, with leafy trees on both sides in low sunlight.

Sizing a central AC system here starts with what the compressor is actually being asked to do each year. Homes in Leavenworth County, KS run cooling about four months a year, from June through September. A compressor that is undersized for the house it serves cycles more often than it should, and each start puts mechanical stress on the contactor and the motor windings. That wear compounds across repeated seasons. A contractor running a load calculation before quoting the equipment is accounting for the local cooling demand so the installed unit runs in its efficient range rather than fighting to keep up from the first summer it operates.

Ductwork laid down for older equipment carries its own geometry: trunk sizes, branch runs, and return paths built around what was standard then. Half the homes in Leavenworth County, Kansas were built in 1982 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a new central AC system here has to assess whether that existing ductwork can move the air a modern unit delivers, or whether sections need to be reworked before the new system performs as rated. Electrical service gets the same look, since a modern condensing unit draws what the original panel may not have been built to supply. The equipment choice comes after those two questions are answered.

What a Central AC System Includes

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house showing interior ductwork, an air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines, with simple furniture in the rooms.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad along an exterior wall, and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil sits in a utility space, basement, or closet and is where the system does its work on the air moving through the house.

The refrigerant line set runs between those two units, connecting them through a small penetration in the wall. A thermostat on an interior wall is what the homeowner touches to control the whole system, and a condensate drain line carries moisture away from the indoor coil to a floor drain or outside.

The drawing shows how these pieces relate to one another in a typical installation, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to this house.
